Bast (Candle)

Regular price $7.00

Designed from a watercolor painting that I did myself, this lovely candle pays homage to Lady Bast in all her fierce protective glory.

This candle stands 8" tall and is 2" in diameter.
The last one of these I burned lasted approximately 85 hours.

The painting description:
The fierce and nurturing figure of Bast graces this painting. I have a lovely oil rendition of her that I'm quite fond of, but I was inspired to re-create her in a tinier watercolor painting after reading (or beginning to read) Ellen Dugan's The Enchanted Cat. I bought it thinking to feed my love of mythology, and did not get ten pages through it before I was forced to abandon it and start working on this painting of Bast. I was so taken with this description of her that I felt compelled to paint her, so I did (sadly I have still not finished the book...).

An excerpt from the aforementioned inspiring book:
"Bast is a deity of fertility, motherhood, sexuality, love, and music. Our most popular image of Bast is a cat-headed woman, clothed in a formfitting, long, green gown... Black cats are sacred to Bast, as she was typically depicted as a black cat. ...she was linked to the gentle light of the rising sun, earning her the title "the Lady of the East." Bast began as a solar goddess; it was in later times that she became linked to the waxing and waning moon as well. ... Bast is a goddess with a gentle, loving disposition, but she is fiercely protective of her children. ... And just to keep things interesting, Bast is occasionally portrayed as having wings. There are stories that link her with Horus, who was depicted as a falconer hawk on occasion as well. Sometimes Bast was depicted as a hawk with the head of a cat, or a regal feline with outspread wings."
